چکیده

Results A positive correlation between high levels of IL-6 on and blood glucose level on ICU admission in all studied cases, which was much stronger in non-diabetic group (n = 28, r = 0.986, p < 0.001) than diabetic group (n = 59, r = 0.629, p = 0.001), · the insulin dose, the duration needed to reach target glucose level (140-180 mg/dl) and the mean IL-6 level on admission in all studied patients, this positive correlation was much stronger in nondiabetic group (p < 0.001) than in diabetic group (p = 0.002,0.003) respectively, also the duration on mechanical ventilation, the length of ICU and hospital stay was positively correlated to high IL-6 levels on admission.

Metformin Treatment in Hyperglycemic Critically Ill Patients: Another Challenge on the Control of Adverse Outcomes

New-onset hyperglycemia in patients admitted to intensive care units increases the risk of morbidity and mortality. Insulin resistance is frequently seen in the treatment of stress-induced hyperglycemia. Metformin, an oral anti-hyperglycemic agent, may introduce a new treatment protocol in critically ill patients with insulin-resistance hyperglycemia. Fifty-one non-diabetic traumatized patients...

sRAGE in diabetic and non-diabetic critically ill patients: effects of intensive insulin therapy

INTRODUCTION Hyperglycemia represents an independent prognostic factor in critically ill non-diabetic patients but not in those with diabetes. In this context, there is an ongoing debate on the benefit of an intensive insulin therapy, particularly in diabetic patients. We tested the hypothesis that expression of the receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE), an important signal transd...

Prediabetes as a risk factor for stress induced hyperglycemia in non diabetic critically ill adult

Introduction Hyperglycemia in critically ill patients has not shown predict poor outcomes in those with preexisting Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Otherwise hyperglycemia in patients without DM has shown poor outcomes and generally this association reflects the severity of the disease. In addition the high level of glycemia can produce deleterious effects and is associated inversely to the survival. A...

Effects of Pantoprazole on Systemic and Gastric Pro- and Anti-inflammatory Cytokines in Critically Ill Patients

Stress-related mucosal damage (SRMD) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients due to the gastrointestinal blood loss. Prophylaxis of SRMD with proton pump inhibitors or histamine-2 blockers has gained widespread use in intensive care units. Both demonstrated to be effective in reducing clinically significant bleedings, while PPIs has shown to exert some anti ...
